In answer to your 2nd question, yes, I have checked multiple instances of this effect in the source xhtml files. All Para breaks use, there are no scan font br, or well any other tags in the files (xhtml). Re-zip, check on various Desktop apps (inc ADE) - Looking great.

Notepad++ - split the ePub and scrub the file.

Sigil - Split the file down into chapters, title & verso etc (Done).

Sigil - Add very simple H12&3 & firstline indent CSS (Done) The point: mechanically removing spaces-especially when your original premise was that the spacing is irregular between characters-requires some artificial intelligence to recognize not only words but also meaning (from the context of the words that precede and follow any given sequence of letters that might, or might not, constitute a word).
